Your character will automatically move up a year should you choose for them to do so at the end of every year (unless you want to keep them as a student for longer). However, you must receive grades in classes during your OWL and NEWT years to be able to apply for certain jobs after you leave Hogwarts and apply for one.
So take all the classes you wish in your first to fourth years, though some classes may only be taken by third years and above (just check in the board descriptions who may take it). However things will change in your fifth (OWL) year.
[ FIFTH YEARS ]
We ask that you select four + classes to take your OWL in. The teachers will run a special class just for OWL students. You will receive a grade at the end (O to T) and this will be an OWL grade.
[ SIXTH YEARS ]
This year you select up to six NEWT classes, and you may drop one at the end of the year if you decide you don't like it. You take NEWT level classes, almost a mock year for your seventh.
[ SEVENTH YEARS ]
With your five classes ready to take, the professors will again put on a special NEWT class just for those students. At the end you receive a grade (O to T), and you leave school with four OWLs and five NEWTs maximum (depending on how many you pass). This is less than in the Harry Potter canon universe, but we understand you have a real life too. Students who excell in their OWL year (we're talking mostly Os here) may be offered to do up to seven NEWTs.
O - Outstanding. Pass. 10 Bonus House Points. E - Exceeds Expectations. Pass. 5 Bonus House Points. A - Acceptable. Pass. 0 Bonus House Points. P - Poor. Fail. D - Dreadful. Fail. T - Troll. Fail.
