EFFIE GREENGRASS

Welcome to Potions! I expect you all to behave while you're in my classroom. You're not a bunch of seven year olds. But you are my students, and while I will offer you all the knowledge I can, you too have to make an effort. House points are available as an incentive to do so by completing all homework I set you! Your final grades depend on it. Remember you may complete the homework at any time through the year, so just because the month is up, the lesson isn't!
So do you all need a little reminder on classifying potions? Have your brains been asleep all summer? Well we classify potions in a number of different ways, and if you turn your textbooks to page 3 you'll see some of the most common ones.
BREW -- liquid mixture made by boiling solids in water.
CONCOCTION -- a mixture of ingredients, simple as.
DRAUGHT -- one serving or portion of a potion.
ELIXIR -- a sweetened aromatic solution for healing.
PHILTER -- designed to enchant or charm the drinker.
POISON -- designed to harm or kill the drinker.
TINCTURE -- a benign medicine preserved in alcohol.
Hopefully that will refresh your memory from your regular classes. But enough of treating you like first years again, this is your OWL year! And we're going to jump right in with mandrake restorative draughts. Now these can be used to revive a person who has been petrified by a basilisk, as was recorded many years ago in this very school. You see the mandrake plant has strong reviving properties, and our Herbology Professor has kindly sent over some already ground mandrake roots. You'll see in Herbology why I'm so relieved that we don't have to come into contact with those little pests. We also have on your desks two of the finest runespoor eggs. These help to restore memory and improve mental capacity, which in turn assists in reviving a person. And finally, there's some porcupine quills, which you'll need to crush yourself. These also add to the restorative and mind-enhancing effects.
Follow the instructions on the board and then bring your completed potion to my desk with your name on it! Of course we can't complete step six, but usually you'd leave it for three days before you serve it to the petrified person, and they'll be fine!
1. Add 20g fully matured ground mandrake roots
2. Boil for 2 minutes then leave to simmer for 30 minutes
3. Crush 2 runespoor eggs and add to cauldron
4. Stir in counter-clockwise direction for 5 minutes
5. Add 5g crushed porcupine quills and bring to boil
6. Leave to stand for three days, then serve hot

LESSON ONE HOMEWORK
PLEASE PM ALL HOMEWORK TO "DEANN" (ME!)
some questions require internet searches (research) to complete.
5/5 = 20 POINTS Outstanding
4/5 = 15 POINTS Exceeds Expectations
3/5 = 10 POINTS Acceptable
2/5 = 5 POINTS Poor
1/5 = 0 POINTS Dreadful
0/5 or not handed in Troll
1. Suggest why the mandrakes should be "fully matured".
2. What is a runespoor, who's eggs we use?
3. Porcupine quills that have caused no harm are considered the best by Potions makers. Can you suggest why (any logical reason will do)?
4. You've finished your potion in the lesson, and leave it for three days. What should you do now to revive the petrified person?
5. What is the difference (in terms of side effects on the listener) of a mature mandrake's scream and a growing mandrake's scream?
EXTRA CREDIT (10 POINTS)
Write a roleplay, at least one paragraph made up of around eight sentences, describing your character preparing this potion. Include as much detail as possible. You will be judged on descriptions and accuracy out of ten points.
